SNOW & BASEMENT & CRAWLSPACE WATER LEAKS

Uwanted water leaking into our home is frustrating to say the least. In addition, this winter has already proven to be a formidable one. The problem for many unprotected homeowners is waiting to get hit with a deluge of ground water as the snow melts.

Look at it out the window. Innocent enough, right? Picturesque even.
A Winter Wonderland?

Imagine the thousands of gallons of that white water just sitting around & on top of our homes, just waiting for the slightest bit of sun to begin making its way into the ground and through the foundation,  covering the entire floor with water, wicking up through the Sheetrock, destroying paper & organic goods, ruining finished living space, or increasing humidity to unhealthy levels. In addition a wet or damp basement disrupts our busy lives and flow of the household. And if you were considering selling and moving, that is a real burden. Prospective buyers are very apprehensive about wet and damp basements and crawlspaces.

The possibility of toxic mold being present scares anyone. The idea that your wet basement is a recurring problem, that you're trying to unload on them to deal with every time it rains, is a scenario they would just as soon pass on.
As the freshly melted snow percolates into the earth, the idyllic winter scene around your home begins to change.

Slowly the foundation walls begin to feel the hydrostatic pressure, the concrete slab resists for a time, but it's futile. The concrete is after all, porous.
The earthen crawlspace gradually becomes muddy & wet. In short order, foul smells emanate from the wet, damp basement and crawlspace that lie below the living space. The Indoor Air Quality has been altered. Extra storage space now compromised. Laundry rooms, kids play rooms, pool room, "man" caves, etc. compromised.

What an unpleasant scenario. Fortunately, there is a solution in Statewide Basement Systems,Inc., located in NY and serving Dutchess, Putnam, Westchester, and Ulster Counties, and Faitfield County, CT.

Home Inspections 101: Mold, Water, & Basement Waterproofing

Our grandparents dealt with asbestos, parents, and radon when buying a home. Those are still factors but today we have mold to contend with when purchasing a property. The countless examples of health ailments and even fatalities related to mold exposure are terribly disconcerting.

The basement waterproofing system, aka "drain-tile system" installed by Statewide Basement Systems, will provide a proper solution for water & moisture problems in the crawlspace & basement.

When soils have been taxed to the point where the soils ability to percolate at a fairly quick pace the groundwater naturally goes to the next available area offering the least resistance. Since cement is porous and many of our homes' foundations are sub-grade, they provide an obvious place to infiltrate.

The pressure continues to build in a particularly "wet" event (rainstorm or snow thaw), hence, a more forceful pressure is exerted against the foundation or buildings footprint.

Crawlspaces are sometimes overlooked
by home inspectors, so be sure your inspector has
done a thorough inspection and you are fully informed.
Nobody likes surprises, especially after the purchase of a
property.

Other questions you might want to ask:

Is the work guaranteed?

How long has the company been in business?

Do you have the necessary insurance to perform the work on my home?

Perhaps obvious questions to many, but some folks still do not ask these basic questions of their Home Inspectors.

If you have a question we can help with please call us at 845-635-8084.

Wet Basement: What Lurks Beneath?

Basement_Waterproofing_StatewideBasements.com/mold_sheetrock/
Mold growing on sheetrock
When contemplating your basement waterproofing project, remember this.

All people want a healthy home to enjoy.

The time we spend at home with our families, loved ones, and pets is precious. It is frightening how quickly unhealthy conditions can occur in our homes. Often, water seeps into the foundation and allows for a wet basement. It does not have to be a flood. Mold colonies grow and spread with just a small amount of moisture and organic material (sheetrock or wood). Provide the right temperature, and you might as well grab your lab coat and petri dishes.

Just be thankful that the above photo is not the scratch-n-sniff variety.

Mold growths often flourish quickly and can release harmful mycotoxins into the air that we breathe. Some are toxic and others are not. Regardless, even non-toxic mold species cause horrible health ailments for many individuals, particularly those with a predisposition to a certain allergy or illness. Elderly folks as well as youngsters, often face more difficult challenges when faced with these less than ideal environmental changes. Outdoors, molds' will release the same toxic mycotoxins, but there is enough airspace to offset the ill effects.
Not surprisingly, perhaps, the indoor environment is another matter entirely, presenting possible dire consequences.

Fortunately, we have learned much about the dangers over the past decade as our medical and scientific communities have spent a good amount of time and resources investigating and analyzing data and conducting vast experiments which have yielded valuable information on the long ignored topic.

Some continue to ignore the problem. Hoping the water that entered the home's basement or crawlspace, will not harm them, and subside.

This is simply not the case.

As we know, this can lead to a number of unhealthy effects on those who inhabit the home, as well as, the home's structural integrity and value. The home's comfort level will also be noticeably changed. Smells, unpleasant sights, and damaged items are just a few of the welcome examples after the basement waterproofing system has been installed. One of the most important factors to consider, when facing water damage from a wet basement, is IAQ indoor air quality.

Many of us, unknowingly exacerbate the risks to our families and home, by closing the doors and windows and air conditioning our sealed homes. The problem is we have also increased the rate at which detrimental particulate matter travels in the air we breathe. This poor indoor air being circulated consists of unhealthy airborne particulate matter originating from the damp wet basement, where the the mold has taken root and is thriving. Often the mold  is not visible  because it loves the dark (interior wall space), and eats the paper-faced gypsum board in the privacy of the hollows of the walls in your home. Many homeowners, falsely breathe a sigh of relief after a quick water intrusion incident, that produces no "visible" mold. Therefore,  the mold colonies are left to thrive in the basement and only further investigated, when someone  develops cold symptoms or nagging headaches, sinuses, sore throats which  become common health impediments.

To stop mold and unhealthy wet basements you must stop the water.
Your wet basement or crawlspace should not be ignored any longer.
